Spot-starts

Jeremy Hellickson (vs. SD) | 46.0% Owned

Hellickson has been brilliant this season, but his owned percentage remains under 50 percent. Hellickson has allowed just one earned run on eight hits, one walk and 17 strikeouts in his last three starts (17.1 innings).

Hellickson has not tossed enough innings to be a qualified starter yet, but his 2.48 xFIP would be good for fourth in the majors—behind only Gerrit Cole, Jacob deGromand his teammate Max Scherzer. Hellickson’scontact and ground-ball ratesare among the league’s best right now as well. Simply put, he’s pitching like a top-20 hurler right now and he draws a matchup I’ve taken advantage of before.

The Padres are 29th in the MLB in OPS (.660)with the third highest strikeout percentage (26.1%)and fifth worst wRC+ (85). Pick him up, start him tonight and keep him on your active roster moving forward.

Domingo German (@ TEX) | 10.4% Owned

German kind of made me look bad last week. He had a brilliant outing vs. the Indians on May 6th and I touted him as a good pickup option with Jordan Montgomery out, but he struggled vs. Oakland in his second start. After getting the weekend off thanks to a rain out, German is back in the rotation tonight in Texas. Like I mentioned the first time I talked about German, he has an elite fastball—12th highest Avg Spin Rate (2522 RPM) in the MLB right now and fifth among starting pitchers.

Making German even more enticing is his glorious matchup. He faces a Rangers team that has the worst K% (26.2%) in the MLB, third worst wRC+ (79)and fourth worst OPS (.677). Forget his last start, he is a high-end option tonight.

Globe Life Park in Arlington isn’t a great pitcher’s park, but this is a guy who makes most of his appearances in Yankee Stadium.

Free Agent Adds

Jack Flaherty (SP) — Cardinals — 37.8% Owned

OK, I know I’ve talked about Flaherty a ton already, but it’s for good reason. He is coming off of his most impressive start yet, raking up 13 strikeouts and only allowing one run on two his and one walk across 7.2 innings. He owns a polished 2.31 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, 10.41 K/9 and 3.85 K/BB ratio through four MLB starts and he looks to be locking down his spot in the Cardinals’ rotation moving forward.

Tyler O’Neill (OF) — Cardinals — 13.7% Owned

Another Cardinals’ rookie who is making a lot of noise right now is Tyler O’Neill. The outfielder is someone I wrote about before as well, but it was hard to envision where he would slot into a crowded St. Louis outfield. Since his most recent promotion, O’Neill has gone 7-for-12 (.583) with five runs scored, three home runs and six RBIs in just four games. At this rate, they won’t be able to take him out of the lineup even if they wanted to.

The 22-year-old Canadian is no stranger to hitting bombs. In 2017 he smashed 31 homers with 95 RBIs in Triple-A and started this season with 13 home runs and 31 RBIs while hitting over .300 in 29 games with Triple-A Memphis.
